"As the spirit matures, so the hand tires: the tragedy of any normal solo violinist's career. The Frankfurt violinist Alois Kottmann is one of the fortunate ones whose dexterity has not diminished with age; applying exquisite discipline and unerring precision he draws the musical lines in the two Bach solo concertos, in E major and A minor, and in the double concerto in D minor together with his son Boris with whom he enjoys an instinctive rapport (Melisma 7210-2). The tone is lean and supple, the diction characterised by the 'rhetorical' eloquence and richness which stems from profound knowledge of authentic performance (to which the accompanying Collegium Instrumentale, playing with dancer-like agility, is also committed). Added to this is a factor which no amount of theory study can yield: the tranquillity and sovereignty of a reading which moves trance-like, as it were, through these musical spheres filled with order and harmony and, carried by this, refuses to be led astray into posturing or false emphasis, into prettifying or theatrical extras. This selfless performance gives something most special: the sum of a lifetime's wisdom and craftsmanship. Bach is the 'Meister'; anyone seeking to approach him should not seek to 'master' him (the great Bach pianist Svyatoslav Richter knew this much), rather should remain his apprentice, full of a pupil's pride and humility."
